In this lecture, I ask students to reflect on just what we mean by the term "research." I also challenge common conceptions of "hard" vs. "soft" sciences, and I give prospective thesis track students advice on choosing research topics. Finally, using a case study, students explore how ignoring research methodology can impact journalistic coverage of basic science and discuss what effects that can have on public trust of both journalism and science.
