The Business-Cycle Index increased by 0.1% from December 2020 to January 2021. The local unemployment rate increased to 5.5% in January from 5.4% in December and is the third lowest rate among Texas metros. Local nonfarm employment increased slightly by 0.3% in January and is 5.5% lower than it was in January 2020. Local real taxable sales increased 5.2% from December to January and were 0.4% higher than the same month last year. While local employment numbers in most industries are within 5% of their pre-pandemic levels, as of January, Leisure and Hospitality employment is down 23% compared to February 2020.
